Welcome to Kettering Amateur Swimming Club

Kettering Swimming Club is the premium competitive club within Kettering and the surrounding areas. We are a dynamic and exciting club with a long and proud history. Originally based at the Victoria Baths in Bath Lane Kettering, we moved to our present site on London Road in 1984.

Founded on the 15th of December 1914 the Kettering Men’s Swimming and Water Polo Club had 40 swimmers and 20 committee members. Membership to the club at the time cost 2 shillings and 2 pence (around 12.5p) and pool hire for 1 gala was 1 Guinea (about £1.05). Today’s galas take a minimum of 3 hours pool hire and it costs £60 per hour.

It was with great sadness that we learned last week that Roger Patrick, a long time member of KASC, had passed away. Roger has been a stalwart of the water polo squad for many years and won many accolades for his contributions to the club and to water polo.He even competed in our club champs just last year.

For anyone who knew Roger and would like to attend his funeral, it is to be held on Friday 15th December at 1.45pm at the Church of the Holy Trinity and St Paul, Balmoral Rd,Northampton NN2 6JZ. The wake will be held at Northampton Sailing Club, Pitsford,NN6 9DG

Below is a tribute to Roger –

Roger Patrick 1937-2017: Roger

With his father one of the founding members of Kettering Swimming Club, it was natural for Roger Patrick to be swimming from a young age, this enthusiasm transitioned to water polo which resulted in him playing for more than sixty five years.

The swimming club and the water polo club were a significant part of Roger's life; he met his wife, Diane and lifelong  friend Don Mobbs (also a player) at the club. As mentioned his father was also a founding member of the swimming club and Roger recently helped with the 100 year celebrations; faithfully recreating an early photo of the club, including his father, having fun at Wicksteed park, photos enclosed.

Whilst KASC and Water Polo were a large part of Roger's his life, Roger was also big part of the swimming club and the sport of Water Polo. As well as being an accomplished player, playing at national level and for many years in the Midlands league, he also contributed significantly to the sport and was not shy in taking on responsibility to support the game. Over the years he set up, and was a driving force for the East Midlands Waterpolo League which ran for thirty five years under his stewardship. He was, over the years Secretary, Chairman and Treasurer for Kettering Water Polo, culminating in President for Life, and spent hundreds of hours on "the table" (supported by his wife, Diane) or refereeing matches (with an unwavering sense for fair play and an enjoyable game).

He always looking to encourage juniors into the sport and was instrumental in introducing hundreds of youngsters to the sport - coaching, encouraging, arranging friendlies and setting up taster sessions.

In recognition of all of his services to the sport he was invited for tea at Buckingham palace a few years ago.

Roger also had a great sense of community around the sport, but also had a passion for Devon and surfing. Somehow he managed to combine all these passions and was instrumental in arranging a friendly between Kettering and Barnstaple. This friendly has endured for forty five years, with Roger playing in every single match. Over the years a "community" has grown around the match, as family and friends spend the week of the match as a holiday in Devon; this community is now in excess of two hundred people and four generations! Roger still managed to get out surfing this year, even at 80 years young!

Roger is survived by his wife Diane, son Neil, five grandchildren and two great grand children

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Please find attached the entry form and information for the long course county champs 2018 at Corby pool – dates 27th/28th Jan, 10th/11th Feb and 17th Feb. Please note there is an error on the heading for the Saturday 27th sheet on the schedule of events document – it says 28th when it should say 27th Jan.

Please check through swimmers’ times and check against the qualifying times. Amanda and the coaches will also be letting you know what events swimmers have qualified for. Do print entry forms off if you wish but the club will be getting paper copies to you.

Deadline for forms to come back to us is Monday 8th January. They can be handed to Amanda, Hilary or your coaches.

The coaches will be running a ‘help session’ for county champs qualifiers on Thursday 4th January at the Cornmarket Hall. Time yet to be decided and I will let you know when it has been confirmed. The session will provide help with filling the entry form in and what to expect on the county champs weekends.

Please click here for information about attending swimming galas.

Gemma Simms – Junior Head Coach

Since the beginning of January 2016 I have taken on the role of Junior Head Coach. Most of you know me as I was previously Assistant Junior Head Coach. Claire wanted to
spend more time at her Sports Therapy Clinic and after
completing my qualifications and Sports Coaching degree I
decided coaching swimming was the career path for me.

I’ve been a member of the club since I was 7 so for
nearly 17 years! I started as a beginner and like many of you worked my way up to the senior squads. I swam in galas, open meets, county, regional and national (Welsh) competitions.

I am looking forward to spending many more years at the club as a swimmer and
more importantly a coach. The club as a whole is doing fantastically well at the minute and it is great to be a part of that. Onwards and upwards for KASC!

Latest News

Junior Swimmer of the Month - Nov 17

NOVEMBER JUNIOR SWIMMERS OF THE MONTH:
Emily Laskey – Emily has been chosen as this month’s winner as I am so proud of the recent progress that she has made. Emily only returned to the club, after taking a break from swimming, after the Summer break. She slotted straight back into her previous training lane and has been working hard at every session. She was keen to enter the club championships despite only having a few months training under her belt. Emily swam brilliantly and earnt herself some huge PBs in the process! Congratulations Emily and keep up the good work.

Jacob Hicks – Jacob has also been given the award this month due to his hard work and recent achievements. This year Jacob has worked his way through the Academy stages and into Development 1 due to the effort he puts in to learn and improve his swimming skills. He has overcome his nerves and has competed for the club in several galas this year. He also entered his first club championships and came out with county qualifying times! He has come such a long way so Well Done Jacob

Corby Long Course Meeting

KASC have been invited to attend the Corby Long Course Open Meet held at Corby pool on the 24/25th March 2018.

This will be a great opportunity to swim in a 50m pool and a great event to get a regional time.

The price is £6 per event and age is at December 31st 2018.

There are upper limit times (so swimmers can’t be faster than the times) and the closing date for entry forms to come in to us is Sunday 17th December 2017.

All entry forms and further information are attached.

All development and senior squad members are encouraged to enter and any academy swimmers who are interested can contact Claire for advice.

Please give your entry to your coach, myself or Amanda along with your entry fee either in cash or cheque made payable to Kettering Amateur Swimming Club. Please ensure entry forms are completed in full.

Any further problems or queries please ask or see your coach.

County championships forms will be sent out in the next day or two.

Thanks

Hilary Reed
